We have received a number of emails regarding the DOE’s position that nursing does not qualify as a “professional degree.” We share the concern that this characterization undermines the critical contributions of nurses—contributions firmly supported by the academic rigor and clinical intensity of post-baccalaureate nursing programs. We are deeply disappointed by the DOE’s proposal to exclude nursing from the definition of professional degree programs.
Some have questioned the “uproar,” suggesting that nurses will always be considered professionals regardless of the DOE’s definition. However, this issue goes far beyond terminology. The proposed change would limit access to funding for future nursing students, decrease the capacity of nursing programs, and ultimately weaken the nursing workforce.
We are not sitting idly by—we are raising our voices to advocate for the recognition and inclusivity our profession deserves. We urge you to join us by contacting your legislators and encouraging them to stand with us. Your support and your voice are essential in this effort.
